Dec. 23rd, 2007

I will be cross-posting this, but my 'puter went belly-up this morning;  first, it suddenly went to the blue screen of death (Win XP) about memory, with a memory dump message at the end of it.  I turned it off and back on, and now get "unmountable boot" sector.  Dell diagnostics says there is an "Uncorrectable data error" in one of the blocks.

Am I as hosed as I think?  Is there a reliable local (to St. Louis) repair outfit who might help me for not TOO much money?  At least to retrieve the retrievable stuff from the probably dead drive so it's not gone forever?  My 'puter is sooooo personalized.  *whimpers piteously*

I'd surely like the world to stop sending challenges for a few months, dammit.  We're down to one relatively useful car between the three of us at the moment., although the kid's gonna get something usable by way of my father, it looks like.  But I'll have my car at the repair shop this week, and even though Don's runs OK, it needs to have it's wiper fluid motor fixed.  I've been making do with Windex.  Good thing most of the road crud's gone.

Any of you who can, have a great holiday, 'k?  Troubles are meant to pass, and these will too.
